Both Jessi Dobbins and Amber Wilson came to yoga when life felt overwhelming, and they couldn’t believe the transformative effect that it had on their lives. According to Wilson, “We started out by going to a weekly class together, and have never looked back. We have taught at studios, gyms, and ran 6-week sessions at various locations. We often called ourselves the traveling yogis.”

Their dream to have their own studio was realized with the opening of Gorham Yoga Company in May of this year. “When faced with the decision if we should chase after our dream or play it safe, we decided to take the risk. Having a ‘home-base’ where we can provide the gift of yoga, meditation and mindfulness has been amazing,” said Wilson.

Balancing their new business with their full-time job as moms (Wilson has four children and Dobbins has two), the duo chose Gorham because they love the community feel in the Village. They had been thinking of opening a studio in the Village for years, so when the Main Street location became available for rent, they decided to make the leap. They believe that being within walking distance of USM is a benefit and they offer many student deals and discounts.

Wilson and Dobbins both did their 200hr training with Well Heart Yoga under Leslee Hartwell and their 500hr training under Brooke Boon in Flagstaff, AZ. Wilson attained her Trauma Certification under Heidi Vance in Phoenix, AZ. She is finishing up her senior year at Johnson State University, studying Wellness and Alternative Medicine. Dobbins has also gained a certification in hands on assist with Jonnie Goodmanson in Ocean City, New Jersey.

Gorham Yoga Company offers a wide range of classes and class times to accommodate early risers, stay at home moms, working folks during their lunch breaks, and those who prefer an evening time slot.

The majority of classes are Vinyasa which is an all levels class where students link conscious breath with mindful movement. They also offer power yoga, warm yoga, restorative, and various kids’ sessions throughout the year. While the summer schedule was slightly scaled down, a new fall schedule will be announced during an open house being held on Friday, September 15, from 5:00-9:00 p.m.

Gorham resident Victoria Reynolds said, “I have found Gorham Yoga Company and all its instructors to be helpful, skilled and professional. They have created a warm and inviting atmosphere where there is shared respect and peaceful vibes. It is charming and inspiring at the studio and the times and choices of classes are thoughtful.”

When asked what sets Gorham Yoga Company apart from other studios, Wilson shared, “We believe that yoga is a practice that brings people together. While there may be slight differences from studio to studio, we are never seeking to be different, or better than others. We truly believe that ‘your people will find you.’ Everyone is drawn to different people, studios, and classes based on numerous things. We are just happy to provide yoga to those who are looking to practice. We hope each person will enter class feeling welcomed and leave feeling inspired, challenged and restored.”

Gorham Yoga Company is located at 12 Main St and is open six days a week. The studio offers classes, workshops, private or semi private sessions, and yoga parties. Two workshops for all levels are upcoming on August 12 and August 25.
