Lions Club First Annual Car Show
Whether you like hot rods or antique cars, the Gorham Lions Club First Annual Car Show is the place to be on July 26, behind the Public Safety Building at the Narragansett School parking area. The show opens at 8 a.m. and should include a wide variety of cars as there will be 12 different classes of cars being judged. Admission is free.
Camp Sunshine will have a Monster Fire Truck on display. Have your children photographed on the truck; proceeds to benefit Camp Sunshine. There will also be a food court open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., hosted by the Lion's Club. Parking is available at St. Anne's church
The Lions primary charity the support is eye care for those in need both locally and globally; locally support Camp Sunshine, the Susan Curtis Camp, Gorham High School and various other scholarship funds. Recently the Lions Club purchased and installed all of the flags you see along the streets of Gorham. All net proceeds from this event will go to these and other similar charities.

Community Happenings

The Farmer's Market will be open to the Gorham community starting at 5:30 p.m. prior to the Summer Gazebo Concert Series which begins at 6:30 p.m. at 270 Main St. The Royal River Philharmonic Jazz Band will be featured on July 29 and the Caribbean Music of Rog & Ray will be featured on Aug. 5. Kevin and Karen Hawkes are pleased to announce the return of their
son, SPENCER HAWKES (GHS '06), from his mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he has spent two years working with the Hispanic population in Portland, Ore. All friends are invited to join his family in an open house held in his honor on Saturday, Aug. 16 from 5-9 p.m. at his home at 5 Robie St. in Gorham. The public is also invited to attend Spencer's report of his mission on Aug. 17, 9 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 755 River Road in Windham. After a brief visit with family and friends, Hawkes will be attending Brigham Young University in Provo, UT where he will be studying art and languages.
CINDY DROWN, who has been a Commercial Lines Account Manager with the CE Carll Insurance Agency since 1996, has recently been certified as a Construction Risk & Insurance Specialist (CRIS.) This insurance designation recognizes specialized expertise in construction insurance.
There will be a Community Fundraiser Supper for the White Rock Historical Society on Saturday, Aug. 9, 5-6:30 p.m. at the White Rock Community Club, Wilson Road, in Gorham. A dinner of spaghetti and meatballs, Italian bread, salad and dessert will be served. $6 adults/$3 12 and under.
Narragansett School will hold a Summer Kindergarten Screening Date
on Aug. 14, for children who will be five years old on or before Oct. 15, 2008 and plan to attend school for the '08/'09 school year. Birth certificate and immunization records are required at the screening. To schedule appointment, call 222-1250.
The Gorham Recreation Department summer camp for children between grades one and six visited Smiling Hill Farm as a way of encouraging youth to learn more about local foods. The visit was supported by a Summer Youth Farm Program Grant awarded to Gorham Recreation from Communities Promoting Health, a program of PROP—People's Regional Opportunity. The campers learned about the operation of a dairy farm and sampled some of the products produced at Smiling Hill farm.
Children at the North Gorham Public Library created puppets after an
interactive story time with Gorham author & illustrator, Cathryn Falwell.
The USM Art Department invites the public to a Juried Art Exhibit titled, "Retinal Delights III," celebrating the art and artists of the surrounding Gorham community. The art will be on display at the USM Art Gallery, Gorham on Aug. 8 from 3-7 p.m., Aug. 9 from 1-4 p.m. and Aug. 10 from 1-4 p.m. Opening reception is Friday, Aug. 8 from 4-7 p.m. FMI, 780-5460.

Two nurse practitioner volunteers from Leavitt's Mill Health Center, a free clinic in Buxton, were recently awarded a comprehensive women's health grant from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Foundation. LOIS HAMEL, PhD, NP and PATSY THOMPSON LEAVITT, MS, NP wrote the grant to improve

DEAN'S LIST
MEGHAN CLEMENTS (GHS '05), was recently named to Merrimack College of North Andover, Mass. spring's 2008 Dean's List. She is the daughter of Mark and Peggy Clements of Gorham.
TYLER GOWEN (GHS '05), has been named to the Dean's List at the University of New England for the spring semester. Tyler is an English major and the Editor-in-Chief of the school newspaper, Nor'easter News. He is the son of Bruce and Mary Gowen of Gorham.
KATLYN GUIMOND (GHS '05), a marketing major, was named to the Dean's List at Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I.
BENJAMIN LILLY (GHS '10), a major in Marine Engineering Technology, was recently named to the Dean's List at Maine Maritime Academy.
MEREDITH MARTIN (MSSM '05), was named to the Dean's List at Clarkson University in Potsdam N.Y. Martin, a double major in Biochemistry and Biomolecular Studies, was awarded a summer internship in the prestigious biochemistry lab of Dr. Silvana Andreescu. Martin will begin graduate studies in chiropractic & acupuncture in January at the New York Chiropractic College in Seneca Falls, N.Y. She is the daughter of Barbara and Kenneth Martin of Gorham.
BEN MOSHER (GHS '06), was named to the Dean's List at Rochester Institute of Technology for the 2008 spring semester. Mosher, a New Media major, is the son of Mark and Rosalie Mosher.
ELIZABETH PLOWMAN, who earned academic high honors at Lawrence Academy for the spring trimester. Plowman is the daughter of Bonny and Stephen Plowman of Gorham.
PATRICK TABER (GHS '05), a finance major, was named to the Dean's List at Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I.
ROB TOLE (GHS '05), an economic major, was named to the Dean's List at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. for the 2008 spring semester.

WHITNEY FLANAGAN graduated from Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Anthropology. She is the daughter of Paul and Cathy Flanagan.
MILESTONES
Former Gorham resident BRIDGET (GODFREY) LYNCH (GHS '70), was elected President of the International Confederation of Midwives at a recent convention in Glasgow, Scotland. The convention was attended by 3,000 midwives from 80 countries and is the first time a president has been elected by vote. Lynch became a midwife 25 years ago, practices at Community Midwives of Toronto and is an associate professor at McMaster University.
Hartwick College junior JULIANA VAN DE KROL (GHS '05), was the recipient of the Grace Jones Spain Scholarship recognizing academic excellence in a health profession. Van de Krol, who is a majoring in nursing, is the daughter of Barbara Van de Krol and Andrew Van de Krol.
ELIZA LOCKHART-JENKS (GHS '05), was named a Faculty Scholar in both Political Science and Theatre Arts at Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y. She is the daughter of Patrice Lockhart and William Jenks of Gorham.
HANNAH BROADDUS (GHS '06), was elected to the University of New Hampshire chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest and most prestigious scholarly honor society in the United States. Broaddus, who is majoring in communications, is the daughter of Samuel Broaddus and Sandra Jensen of Gorham.

PETRA LEHMAN (GHS '05) and DILLAN MASALLES were married on Saturday, June 28, 2008 in a small wedding on North Hampton Beach, N.H. The bride, who is the daughter of Peter Lehman of Thomaston and Susan Olson Gwozdz and Joseph Gwozdz of Gorham, is a graduate of the University of Maine and currently a marketing assistant for Prevent Child Abuse in New York. The groom, is the son of Lauren and Mike Masellas of Wells, Maine and a graduate of Maine Maritime Academy and an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. They are currently residing in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
