GORHAM MARATHON RUNNERS—Three runners from Gorham were among the top finishers from Maine in the Boston Marathon on April 21. Male runners were CHARLES WHITEHEAD who finished 35th with a time of 3:22:40 while DICK GRAVES finished 37th with a time of 3:26:24. Among females, COURTNEY FRANCIS came in 63rd with a time of 4:58:43.

MAY MADNESS SOCCER TOURNAMENT: GYSA will host the 10th Annual MayMadness soccer tournament at YourSpace May 17-18 for ages Under-9 through Under-12. Games run from 8 a.m. into the afternoon with U12 championships at the end. Girls play May 17, boys play May 18. The public is invited, admission is free. Activities for kids will take place throughout each day including music, food and a barbeque. Extra parking at Moody's Collision Center with shuttle rides to YourSpace. COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY FOR GHS STUDENTS: GYSA is looking for high school students interested in community service work for the weekend of May 17-18. The group, hosting its MayMadness soccer tournament, need help running activities including speed kicking, bouncy house and selling food. Interested students can e-mail Colleen Plumer at cplumer@maine.rr.com.

GOLF TOURNAMENT FOR GHS SCHOLARSHIPS: The Gorham Business & Civic Exchange 7th Annual Golf Scramble is scheduled for June 21 at Gorham Country Club. Gorham Women Win Westbrook-Gorham Rotary Race



A team of runners representing Gorham took first place in the team female division of the Westbrook-Gorham Rotary Road Race April 21 in Westbrook. Gorham team member Rachel Wilkinson was the first overall Female Individual Winner while Sarah McCullough won the award for the First Female Finisher representing Gorham or Westbrook other than the overall winner. Running for Gorham and pictured (l to r) are: Sarah McCullough, Corey Perkins, Sara Martin, Solange Carpenter, Jenny Thuote, Emily Southard and Rachel Wilkinson.

GHS Spring Sports Early-Season Highlights

BASEBALL: Senior Brian Jenkins keyed a 12-8 April 24 win over Windham by hitting a two-run homer and a bases-loaded triple that broke a tie game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Nate Sturgis and Ben Smart combined for a shut-out May 6 in an 11-0 win over Noble. Captains for the team are seniors Joel Mundy, Jenkins and John Dahms.

SOFTBALL: Junior pitcher Kelsey Crowe had a grand slam against Windham May 2 and struck out 38 batters in three consecutive shut-out wins over Windham, Noble and Marshwood. The team was 5-1 through May 7. Gorham opened the season April 25 with a 3-2 come-from-behind win that featured three runs in the last inning led by hits from Lauren Chouinard, Bri Verrill and Krista Keene. Captains for the team are seniors Monique King, Keene and Verrill.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD: As of May 7 the team was 5-1 with several athletes having already qualified for the State Meet: Cam Stevens in the 400- and 200-meters; Justin Villacci—100; Luke Seiferth - Racewalk; Chris Esposito—300 hurdles; Jake Willis—Long Jump; Brett Walker—Triple Jump; Jon Day—High Jump; Shawn Connolly—Discus; and Connor Walker, Matt Doak and Eric Sawyer—Javelin. Captains for the team are senior Andrew Arena and sophomore Stevens.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD: As of May 7 the team was 5-1 with several athletes having already qualified for the State Meet: Nicole Belhumeur—Javelin; Alyson Fearon—100- and 200-meters; Leigh Maniscalco—100, 300 hurdles and pole vault; Corey Perkins—triple jump; Kelsey Rex—1,600 and 3,200; and Rachel Wilkinson—800 and 3,200. Maniscalco was a three-event individual winner April 30 against Bonny Eagle, Deering and Marshwood when she won the 300 hurdles, the long jump and the pole vault. Captains for the team are senior Athena Beaulieu, junior Siobhan Bolinger and sophomore Wilkinson.

BOYS LACROSSE: The team started the season 2-0 with wins over St. Dominic's and South Portland. Senior attacker Brendan Ryan scored seven goals and notched six assists in the two games while goalie John Allen and the entire defense have been solid. Other key scorers in the first two games included Ian Ryan (4 goals); Alex Chase (3 goals, 1 assist) and Duncan Alden (3 goals). Captains for the team are Brendan Ryan and junior Clayton Loubier.

GIRLS TENNIS: The team was 4-1 in the regular season through May 7 with all the wins coming on scores of 5-0. The team also won the First Annual Flight Tournament held over April vacation against Deering, Westbrook, Windham and Caribou. In this tournament, Libby Johnston won the #3 singles flight while Brittany Raymond and Shannon O'Brien won the #1 doubles flight and Natalie Egbert and Julia Parmakian won the #2 doubles flight. Captains for the team are seniors Kate Bowring and Johnston.

BOYS TENNIS: As of May 7 the team was undefeated at 5-0 led by singles players Aaron Bergeron, Isaac Pease and Kyle Reinheimer as well as the doubles teams of Eric Custeau and Jacob Shorty and Kiet Thai and Pat Shaw. Captains are seniors Bergeron and Pease.

GIRLS LACROSSE: Team captains for the season are senior Kayla Neilson as well as juniors Sam Martin, Molly Folan and Aimee St.Germain.

Speed Training with Olympian
2000 Olympian Donovan Powell presented speed enhancement sessions April 22-25 at YourSpace. Participants from ages 11 and up learned how to enhance overall speed, strength and quickness. Powell is also the speed coach and older brother of Asafa Powell, the world record holder in the 100-meters (9.74.).
