Up the elevator at Station Square to the fourth floor and through the glass doors on the left, you will find Sidecar, Gorham’s newest food and drinks venue. The low-key atmosphere and unique socializing space for adults is a perfect fit for the growing Village area. Its individuality is an asset that sets it apart from anywhere else in the greater Portland area.

Owner, Ben Smith is confident Sidecar is exactly what Gorham needs. The mature drink options and array of unique small plates tapas makes it stand out.

“We’re not just a whiskey bar,” Smith said. “We’ve got a lot going on here.” Not only is Sidecar open for business for the everyday spirit lover or charcuterie enthusiast, they also host small gatherings such as showers and birthday events. For a more private environment, the upstairs lounge area with a balcony overlooking the center of town is a perfect place for a small group gathering or to admire the sunset.

For cocktail lovers, their signature drink and namesake, The Sidecar, is a must try, made expertly by Dan, the bartender who you’ll see upon arrival. The staff, dressed in black attire, are knowledgeable, friendly and ready to answer any questions.

The upscale interior is anchored by tall windows and pictures of familiar faces of musical inspirations from generations past: Johnny Cash to Aretha Franklin embody the music playing in the background.

The cozy, classy interior at Sidecar welcomes adults who want to relax and share a drink and light tapas with friends.

The simple layout is centered around a bar with a variety of seating options arranged strategically around the walls. A few booths offer some privacy, more formal high tops and casual couches give guests the impression that whatever they’re in the mood for can be found in this cozy and classy spot for drinks and tapas.

Ben Smith, the owner, gives credit to his significant other, Amy Pompeo, for the eclectic ambiance of the environment. Cow print lounge chairs and natural wood coffee tables give a unique, Americana vibe. Smith admits this is on purpose. “It’s a warmer environment,” he said, comparing Sidecar to his other business venture, Junction Bowl.

He added, “It’s less family-friendly up here. We see a lot of couples or meetings with colleagues.” This is proven true by the assortment of people comfortably sipping signature cocktails, here for a birthday celebration with a few old friends or a twosome quietly conversing in a dimly lit corner.

Local musical guests and Tuesday night karaoke add a taste of Portland nightlife without having to leave the comfort of town. The growing popularity of Sidecar makes it a must try on your next night out in Gorham.
