GHS Student Intern

Throughout the current school year, the Gorham High School (GHS) Student Council reached out to the school and town community, providing for people’s needs and interests.

After the GHS Winter Ball in January, the Council donated $450 to Gorham’s new BackPack program, which sends students in need home with food over weekends and vacations. The Student Council also helped organize blood drives throughout the year, which helps not just Gorham but surrounding areas. The group holds two every school year, generally in October and March. The last blood drive was on March 19, and fifteen pints of blood were donated. This is enough to possibly save 45 lives.

On May 4, the Council organized a community building event for the high school. It was originally planned to take place on an early release day in March as tribute to the Parkland shooting, but was postponed due to a snow day. The event was based around building positive energy in the school in an effort to improve students’ morale and bring awareness to the tragedy in Florida.

The event included activities such as making friendship bracelets, listening to poetry, voter registration, and more. The day ended with a Unified basketball game, which the entire school was able to attend in the gym. The event was overall a success and had a positive response from students and faculty alike.

To end the year, the Council elected its new officers for the upcoming school year. Kyren Bettencourt (current junior) will be president, Olivia Paruk (current junior) will be vice president, Maeve Higgins (current sophomore) will be secretary, and Erin Wentworth (current junior) will be treasurer.

Student Council will also be putting on a final dance for the freshmen and sophomores on June 1 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and will continue to strive to give back to the school and community next year.
