GHS Girls' Ice Hockey Coach

The Gorham/Bonny Eagle girls ice hockey team ended the regular season with a 6-12 record and qualified for postseason play, the third time in four years, after enduring a 0-18 record last season. They closed out with a 4-1 loss to Cape Elizabeth/ Waynflete/South Portland in the Southern Conference quarterfinals.

Four regular season losses were by one goal, including a 5-4 overtime loss to Winslow/Gardiner. The girls enjoyed a very competitive season including a 3-2 regular season victory over archrival York. The girls managed to sweep Biddeford/Thornton Academy for the first time in program history.

Individually, captain Mary Adams (5 goals, 11 assists) led the way on defense, as well as finishing second on the team in points. Adams also scored the lone marker in the playoffs. Freshman Celia Begonia (22 goals, 9 assists) led the Rams in both goals and points, recording multiple hat tricks. She broke the program record for most goals by a freshman.

Assistant captains Karen Stemm (6 goals, 2 assists) and Catherine Beigel, as well as senior Jordan Currier, provided steady leadership. C.C. Cochrane (3 goals, 3 assists), Sadie Denico, and Kaitlin Jodoin regularly manned the blue line, with Denico scoring the overtime winner in a wild 7-6 come-from-behind victory over Winslow/Gardiner.

Sophomore Isis Adams (5 goals, 8 assists) played every position (except goalie), a force to be reckoned with for the next several years. Sophomore Anna Rathbun (6 goals, 2 assists) and junior Meghan Polchies (4 assists) continued to provide secondary scoring and are expected to make another big leap offensively. Freshman Izzy Wareham, the rookie net minder, showed vast improvement throughout the season. All signs point to continued improvement for next year. Look for many of this year’s junior varsity players to step up and fill the void left by the departure of four seniors.
