When it became time for Anne Farrar to downsize her business, Sunrise Corner, which she had run for 25 years in two large antique buildings in Standish Center, she chose a new location in Gorham. She liked its central location at 16 Mechanic Street across from Hannaford, near the post office. The ample parking in the rear of the building was also a plus.

Since 2025, she has been serving customers of all ages at her new home, which has the feel of an old-time penny-candy store. The store also offers a huge selection of over 150 varieties of soda pop. Farrar only carries products that are made with pure cane sugar or zero sugar. No drinks have high-fructose corn syrup.

On the second floor, visitors will find a good array of well-priced gifts for those looking for home decor, antiques, hostess gifts, jams, jellies, and high-quality floral materials. Farrar strives to create a unique environment at Sunrise Corner that is “once found, always remembered.”

On Friday, Aug. 21, Farrar is hosting a Pickle Party Fund Raiser for Make a Wish Maine. Why a pickle party? According to Farrar, several other states host extravagant pickle celebrations, but there are none here in Maine. Farrar said, “After participating in the Taste of Gorham Walk, I thought it might be a fun way to celebrate the lowly pickle and to meet some new people.” She chose Make a Wish as the beneficiary because many of her customers are children, who know her as Miss Anne.

Bring your favorite pickle product, pickle treat and the recipe if you want to share, or just come to try a tasty smorgasbord of pickle treats. What can be pickled? Use your imagination…Almost any fruit or vegetable is fair game. Traditionally canned, or refrigerator…it’s up to you. Or just bring a plain old cucumber and come and enjoy an afternoon of tasting everything from classic pickles to pickle soda to creative pickle-inspired foods and an afternoon of laughter and community fun.

We can’t wait to see what you bring. To help with planning, applications are available at Sunrise Corner. Suggested donation is $10 with all proceeds benefiting Make-A-Wish Maine.
