Four former Gorham High School (GHS) student-athletes are competing at the college level locally and excelling at their sport on and off the field this winter/spring season.

Saint Joseph’s College (SJC) of Maine Lacrosse athlete, Carson Battaglia (GHS ’19) has 16 goals and 3 assists slightly over halfway into the SJC Lacrosse season. In four of the contests, Battaglia had three goals. SJC is dominating this season with 11 wins and no losses. The Monks have six regular season games remaining. Battaglia is studying Nursing.

University of Southern Maine’s (USM) baseball senior, Jason Komulainen (GHS ’17) is leading the team in batting average and RBI. USM started their spring break schedule playing games in both Maryland and in Auburndale Florida at the Matt Russell Invitational tournament. This year’s team has young talent, and will rely on upperclassman Komulainen and teammates Arlo Pike and Brogan Serle-Belanger and senior pitchers James Sinclair and Joshua Joy.

The All Academic Awards for USM have been announced. Two former GHS students/current USM student athletes are named to the 2021-2022 winter sport LEC All-Academic team.

USM senior Michelle Rowe (GHS ’18) a member of the Huskies Basketball team, (5th in the country for her free throw percentage for Div. III), majoring in Nursing has been named.

Brittany Desjardins, a junior on the USM Huskies Basketball team (GHS ’19) majoring in Business Economics has also been named.

To earn the distinguished award, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in standing both academically and athletically, have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the previous semester and have been at their current institution for at least one full academic year.
