On Friday, May 29, fifth-grade students from Village Elementary School took part in the school’s annual Amazing Race, an educational scavenger hunt that brings together Village students and eighth-grade mentors from Gorham Middle School for a day of teamwork, learning and community exploration.

Working in teams, students solved clues, navigated their way through Gorham, and completed interactive challenges at local businesses and organizations throughout town. Along the way, they learned more about the people, careers, and businesses that help make Gorham a thriving community.

The event encourages students to develop leadership, communication and problem-solving skills while building positive relationships between older and younger students. Teams reflected on what inspired them during the day, what they learned about their community, and how they demonstrated leadership while working together.

Local businesses once again played a vital role in the success of the event. Participating organizations included Ferguson Waterworks, Harvey Performance, the Gorham Superintendent’s Office, Po-Go Realty, Norway Savings Bank, Maine Community Bank, Sullivan House Bakery, Third Space Market, Chalmers Insurance, Gorham Sand and Gravel, Hannaford and Great Falls Construction.

One participating business, Third Space Market, shared that students asked thoughtful and engaging questions, noting that this was “by far the best Amazing Race” they had hosted so far.

Village Elementary extends its sincere gratitude to all of the community partners, staff members and student mentors who helped make this year’s Amazing Race a memorable and meaningful experience.
