After volunteering at the non-profit Maine Needs with their Gorham Middle School alternative education program, eighth grade students Rataj and Leela approached their teacher, 2020 Maine Teacher of the Year Heather Whitaker, with an idea.
The girls wanted to create a barrier-free, stigma-free thrift store and resource center for their peers at GMS.

With the help of their teachers, classmates and parent volunteers, Rams Rack opened its storefront inside Gorham Middle School in May.

This didn’t happen overnight; students had to prepare and pitch their idea to building leaders. They were offered an underutilized space in the library, if they could develop and execute their business plan. Students cleared and cleaned the space; reached out to community partners for racks, hangers and bins; and through donations of clothing and the time of experts in retail and interior design, designed a space that feels organized, welcoming, and like a real boutique. One student with artistic interests worked with a local graphic artist to create a logo that will be used for promotional materials and labeling.

Since its launch, more than 253 pieces have been thrifted by students. Some students love the sustainability of thrifting while others love the thrill of the find, but for those who have a need for what is being offered in the store, there is also dignity to be found at Ram Rack. And all because two students saw and wanted to spread community compassion.
