GHS Varsity Basketball Coach Ryan Deschenes recently announced that the recipient of this year’s Henry O’Neill Spirit Award is Andrew Migliorini, a senior player for the GHS Rams. Each season, Coach Deschenes explains the history of the award to his players, and the significance of “Hank It Up,” which is an expression that symbolizes the passion Henry had for his friends, teammates and the game of basketball. Coach Deschenes reminds his players to enjoy high school sports and to create life-long friendships and memories along the way.
Coach Deschenes shared, “Andrew Migliorini embodies the Henry O’Neill Spirit Award in several ways. He supports his teammates, pushing them and himself to be better, and is always there to pick up a teammate when needed. He has a bright smile and laugh that is contagious, he has a great sense of humor and makes everyone around him feel positive. The coaches and captains feel he is a deserving award winner to carry on the tradition that Henry O’Neill illustrated for GHS Men’s Basketball.”
The Spirit Award has been presented five times previously, to Bode Meader (2021), Dylan Morrell (2022), Quinn Dillon (2023), Izak Young (2024), and Jack Karlonas (2025). A scholarship will be presented to the award recipient at the GHS Academic Awards Night in June. Future donations towards this annual scholarship in Henry O’Neill’s name may be made directly to the Gorham High School Athletics Department. Henry O’Neill, GHS Class of 2019, was killed tragically in a work vehicle accident in September 2020.
